White paper, 2008/2022
Crafted by an Uyghur elder in Xinjiang in 2008 and folded into an A4 envelope to bypass the Olympics-era mail paranoia, the four sheets of White Paper (Hotan) are inscribed with the name of the city where they were made. Hotan (خوتەن), a direct translation of a real Uyghur name, is bleached out from the papers’ fibers–mirroring the erasure of the very language and culture they come from as well as the silencing of Chinese protestors in 2022, arrested for holding blank pieces of paper during what we now call the White Paper Protests.
